KUALA LUMPUR - Mark your calendars! For one night only on March 2 (Saturday), Sabahan songstress Velvet Aduk will grace the stage at Jao Tim for an exclusive showcase of her debut English album ‘Darkest Knight’.
Featuring 14 soul-stirring tracks including ‘What Are You Doing With Someone Else’s Husband?’ and ‘Trauma Bond’, Velvet’s first English album is a marked departure from her viral hits including ‘Sumandak Sabah’ and ‘Oi Gaman’.
With her videos having crossed 20 million views on YouTube, Velvet understands too well the appeal of producing easy-listening songs that are fun and jivy. But the singer-songwriter did not want to be stuck in a creative loop, performing only catchy tunes to win over crowds.
Putting together ‘Darkest Knight’ was a labour of love for Velvet. She collaborated with Sabahan musicians Andy O’Mail and Brandon Laurie to co-produce the album, which explored mature themes like betrayal and infidelity, approaching them with honesty and vulnerability.
"In this album, I'm expressing emotions that are often hard to put into words. I'm just being real in my lyrics, especially on the less perfect parts of relationships.
“It's about what I observe around me, the complexities that people hide. We often see the surface of a relationship, but not the broken side of the people in it," she shared.
Velvet thanked the Ministry of Communications for its support, via MyCreative Ventures’ Dana Kandungan Digital (DKD) - a government-backed investment arm dedicated to supporting Malaysia’s creative industries. Their grant, disbursed under the “Dana Kebolehpasaran” category, made possible the production of seven out of the 14 tracks on her album.
Velvet's performance is scheduled to begin at 8:30 pm on March 2 (Saturday), featuring two captivating 45-minute sets with a 15-minute intermission. Prepare to be serenaded by the soulful melodies and lyrics capturing themes of heartbreak and modern loneliness as Velvet gives free rein to her artistic muse.
Tickets for Velvet’s ‘Darkest Knight’ performance at Jao Tim are currently available for RM100 each. For more information, please visit www.jaotim.com.
